Is Your Job at Risk? What to Do Before and After a Layoff

Recent headlines have been filled with news of layoffs and workforce reductions, especially within the federal government. If you’re feeling uncertain about job security right now, you are not alone. The good news? While job loss can feel sudden and overwhelming, preparation can make all the difference in how quickly and confidently you bounce back.

Whether you’re still employed but starting to feel uneasy or you’ve already been laid off, I’m going to share strategic steps you can take to protect your career and plan your next move.

Before a Layoff: Set Yourself Up for Success

Even if you’re not actively job hunting, a little proactive effort can give you a significant edge if the unexpected happens. Here are three things you can do right now:

Keep Your Digital Presence and Resume Fresh

It’s easy to put off updating your LinkedIn profile or resume when work feels steady. But waiting until you're in crisis mode only slows you down. Take some time this week to add recent accomplishments, skills, and certifications. Expand your LinkedIn headline and summary to highlight your expertise beyond just your current title. Then, start to engage! Comment on industry posts, share insights, and reconnect with old colleagues to keep your network warm.

Strengthen Your Professional Relationships

Your network is one of the most valuable tools you have. It is especially valuable if you make the effort to nurture it before you need it. This week, set up at least one casual coffee chat (virtual or in-person) with a mentor, peer, or past coworker. You can also join professional groups and attend events to stay visible!

Create a Financial Safety Net

Job loss is stressful enough without worrying about dwindling finances. If you are able, start setting aside savings to cover a few months of living expenses. Look into your health insurance options in case of job loss (COBRA, spouse plans, ACA) and understand your company’s severance policies and your eligibility for unemployment benefits before you need them.

After a Layoff: Regroup, Refocus, and Rebuild

Losing a job isn’t just a career shift; it’s an emotional one, too. It’s okay to feel disoriented, but don’t let that stop you from moving forward with intention. Here are some things you can do:

Take Time to Process and Reflect

Layoffs can bring up all kinds of emotions — shock, frustration, even relief. Once you’ve had a moment to breathe, ask yourself:

  • Do I want to continue on the same career path or pivot to something new?

  • What did I enjoy (and not enjoy) in my last role?

  • What are my non-negotiables in terms of salary, culture, growth, etc?

Answering these questions now will help you focus your job search on roles that align with your future goals, which may not be the same as your past goals.

Polish Your Job Search Strategy

Now that you have a little more clarity, it’s time to update your materials and messaging. Start by refreshing your resume with a clear, results-driven narrative. You can also optimize your LinkedIn profile and activate the “Open to Work” feature if you’re comfortable. It can really help to create a compelling elevator pitch that quickly communicates who you are, what you do, and what you’re looking for. You will be using it a lot as you embark on your job search!

Leverage Your Network and Industry Connections

Most great opportunities never make it to job boards. I encourage clients to reach out to past colleagues, mentors, and contacts. Let them know what you’re looking for and how they can help. Attend industry events, webinars, or local networking meetups. Visibility matters. Finally, join online job search communities. People often overlook this, but these digital spaces can be rich with leads, encouragement, and resources.

Moving Forward With Confidence

Yes, losing a job is hard. But it’s also a chance to hit “reset” and realign your career with what matters most to you. The key is just to stay proactive. Don’t wait until things feel urgent to take action. Whether you're updating your resume today or reaching out to someone in your network, every step you take is going to help you feel more secure and empowered.
