5 Career Lessons We Can Learn from Beyoncé

Anyone who knows me knows I am a huge fan of Beyoncé. Yes, I am a proud card-holding member of the BeyHive and I am constantly inspired by both her talent and her ingenuity.

As a career coach, I’m always thinking about my clients and the roadblocks they’re up against. I think there are some really great lessons we can learn from Queen Bey herself that extend beyond the world of music and into everyday life and career.

So without further ado, here are five career lessons we can learn from Beyoncé:

Lesson #1 - Always Strive for Continuous Improvement

The thing about Beyoncé is, she never stops. She could easily give it all up and live a really good life with all the money she’s earned. But she doesn’t want to do that. Instead, she consistently works to improve her skills, whether it is singing, dancing, or business management. Job seekers should take a cue from Beyoncé’s hustling nature and seek opportunities to learn new skills — or enhance existing ones — to remain competitive and at the top of their game.

Lesson #2 - Build a Strong Personal Brand

Beyoncé has expertly crafted and maintained her brand year after year. She intentionally uses her platform to uplift and inspire her audience, particularly women and people of color. Your personal brand will probably look a lot different from hers, but being able to clearly define what you stand for and how you differentiate yourself from others in your field will go a long way, especially if you’re anticipating embarking on a job search in the near future.

Lesson #3 - Network and Collaborate

Throughout her career, Beyoncé has collaborated with a wide range of artists and business partners. Most recently, she teamed up with iconic performers like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson for her COWBOY CARTER album. She isn’t afraid to reach out to people even more famous to create something that her fans will love. Similarly, you should be reaching out to the big names in your industry for a coffee date or career mentorship call. It’s so important to understand the value these kinds of professional relationships have to offer.

Lesson #4 - Seek Opportunities to Innovate

Beyoncé has been famous since the late 90’s but she has managed to stay relevant by constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of her work. Each album sounds completely different because she isn’t afraid to push herself into new viewpoints and genres. Job seekers can also adopt a more creative approach to their job search. For example, what if you took a multimedia approach with your resume or interject some humor into your portfolio?

Lesson #5 - Get Out There and Shine!

Beyoncé knows how important it is to maintain a strong public presence. You have to be seen to make an impact, which is why you always see her at award shows, parties, and other industry events. Job seekers can take a cue from this by ensuring they stay visible in front of the right audience, too. Use platforms like LinkedIn, TikTok, and Instagram to showcase your skills, expertise, and achievements.
